Anna Hazare, the 'resolute' wins as Govt gives in
“I will not die till the Lokpal bill is passed”. These were the words of the resolute Anna Hazare who has superimposed himself on the imagination of the countrymen. As the Gandhian Anna Hazare’s slogans ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’,‘Vande Mataram’ and‘Inquilab Zindabad’ echoed through Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, the whole crowd repeated them in unison. On the tenth day of his continuous fast, the defiant Anna seemed to have been actually empowered by the swelling support of his countrymen. As he rightly says-‘Aap sab ki urja mil rahi hai muje’. More than him it is the countrymen who are deriving strength from him, unshackling themselves of complacency.

Anna sets three conditions to end 10-day fast
Gandhian activist Anna Hazare on Thursday set three conditions to end his 10-day fast. The three conditions are firstly the Parliament should start discussing on the institution of Lokayuktas, secondly Parliament should start discussing the adopting of citizens'charter and thirdly the Parliament should start discussing to get lower bureaycracy in Lokpal.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that he was ready to debate all versions of Lokpal Bill. Addressing the Lok Sabha, Dr Singh said that fighting corruption is a collective national responsibility and there is a need to find a credible solution to tackle it.
The core committee of Team Anna Hazare met and discussed Prime Minister's fresh offer that the Jan Lokpal Bill will be considered by Parliament and his request to the Gandhian to end his hunger strike.
The meeting at Ramlila Maidan this afternoon was attended by Hazare, Shanti Bhushan, Kiran Bedi, Medha Patkar and others.

Anna Movement: Political Baptism of the Young India
The Anna Hazare movement saw youngsters in their 20s and 30s, dressed in their jeans and bermudas, T-shirts and sweatshirts, in their sandals and sneakers, on roads, outside Tihar Jail, in the Ramlila Maidan and almost all states of India. This was a moment of their political baptism.
Though the protests seemed to have some justification of people’s pent up anger towards the system, but the justification was increasingly turned into the‘victim’ feeling that the crowd said it will not tolerate. Infact at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan, only few people could justify their presence. People do not know exactly the reason what they are fighting for. They feel connected to Anna’s movement as it is anti-government, exposes the corruption spread by the blemished UPA govt and their inability to check it.

Is Anna's anti-corruption crusade dangerous?
Aruna Roy- a member of National Campaign for People’s Right to Information (NCPRI) has accused the civil society group, headed by anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare, of not following democratic method to seek a strong Lokpal Bill. She went further by saying that the public support to the ongoing movement was because most of the people did not understand what it really meant.
Talking to Headlines TodayExecutive Editor Rahul Kanwal, Roy said,"Jan Lokpal Bill, I challenge you, is not understood by most people. The idea of a magic wand is understood by people. There I think is something wrong... making promises to the people that by passing a law you deal with the whole gamut of corruption."

Anna Hazare: The Unshaken Gandhian
As the 74-year old Gandhian Anna Hazare’s hunger strike campaign continues, the moves to stabilise the political conditions in India are also gaining pace.
After a weekend of non-violent mass street protests, the government has appointed a representative to make a deal to the week-long standoff, reports said.
Anna Hazare, who has fasted for a week, is demanding the creation of an anti-corruption ombudsman with sweeping powers. His hunger strike has focused widespread anger over corruption– which is endemic in India– as well as broader grievances amid the growing middle classes.

I am Anna Hazare... Am I ?
Looking at the multitude of supporters that Anna Hazare movement has been able to muster I am wondering why haven’t equally graver issues, such as the murder of female children, child labour in homes, hotels and factories, or poverty outside our car windows received this kind of support. Why are we as a nation sensitive to one and insensitive to many other important issues ?

Anna's protest: Right or Wrong?
As Anna Hazar, 74 year old frail but staunch Gandhian will head to Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan to resume his fast for Jan Lokpal Bill the Team Anna versus government deadlock seems to be over for now. Anna Hazare has been given the permission to fast for 15 days at Ramlila Maidan. Inspite of the ‘Anna chant’ going viral the civil society is split over whether his method of protest is right or blackmail. Though everybody from opposition to self-proclaimed Gurus and Babas are taking a mileage from Anna's movement, no one's come out to support his version of the Lokpal Bill, not even the political Opposition.

Anna to reach Ramlila Maidan tomorrow
In view of conditions at Ramlila Maidan, Anna Hazare will reach the ground on Friday, Arvind Kejriwal, close aide of Anna Hazare said on Thursday. "While the MCD had promised to clean up the Ramlila Ground, but it may not be ready today "Kejriwal added, saying, "It looks difficult that Hazare may start his protest in Ramlila Maidan today."
Earlier on Thursday, Kejriwal spoke to media outside Tihar Jail saying, “The minute Ramila ground is prepared, Anna will take over. Right now the MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) is cleaning the grounds, the stage is being set”.
As Team Anna announced that they have reached an agreement with the government over the protest venue, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) deployed its employees to clean up the venue.
However, even as hectic preparations were underway at the Ramlila Maidan where authorities pulled out all the stops to make the venue ready for Anna Hazare to hold his protest fast against corruption, Team Anna realised that the ground would not be ready in time.
The cleaning up mission was being monitored by commissioner K S Mehra, who also deputed area deputy commissioner to the Maidan to lead the operations.
"We are working on making the ground ready for the protest as early as possible, "a senior MCD official said, adding earth-movers have been deployed and sweepers engaged in clearing the mess in the ground.
Police also swung into action and conducted checks at the Maidan to ensure that no suspicious objects were there in the ground. A senior police official said adequate number of personnel, including armed, will be deployed at the Maidan.

India waits for Anna to resume fast at Ramlila Maidan
After two nights in Tihar Jail and hard bargaining, Anna Hazare and government reached an agreement early on Thursday morning under which Delhi Police removed all restrictions and allowed him to carry out his hunger strike for a fortnight in the spacious Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi.
The breakthrough in the battle of attribution between the two sides came in the wee hours of the day after top aides of Hazare met Delhi Police commissioner B K Gupta and reached an agreement.
The deal marks a major climbdown from government and police's earlier insistence that the fast would be allowed at JP Park, a smaller venue, only for three days with maximum of 5,000 protesters besides a number of other conditions.
The agreement came more than 40 hours after Hazare's arrest of Tuesday and release the same night. However, the Gandhian refused to come out of the jail, continued his fast and carried out hard negotiations from Tihar through his emissaries.
Activist Kiran Bedi tweeted early morning that Hazare has accepted the Delhi Police offer of 15 days and announced that he will go to Ramlila Maidan after 3 pm.
However, another close aide of the 73-year-old Gandhian said this morning that it may not be possible for Hazare to launch his protest from the Ramlila Ground on Thursday as the venue was full of muck and needs cleaning up.
"I have just spoken to commissioner of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (K S Mehra) who has promised me that a Deputy Commissioner would supervise the cleaning up operations at the Maidan,"Kejriwal said.
He said Hazare going to the protest venue"looked difficult"as of now."We can't give a time as to whether it would start today...if it is possible, (he may do it)."
Bedi had earlier said that Hazare would go to Rajghat before starting his protest in the Maidan after 3pm.
Confirming the deal, home secretary R K Singh said,"Delhi Police and Anna Hazare Team have agreed on the venue, duration, conditions etc."
"Delhi Police and the Anna Hazare team worked out between themselves this agreement. The Delhi Police has no problem in giving 15 days time and the 15 days also suits the Anna Team,"he said.
Kejriwal said Hazare does not want to go before proper arrangements are made at the fast venue because once the crowd gather, it would be difficult to put in place proper facilities.
Arrangements like erection of tents and provision of drinking water facilities were being made.
He said that Hazare's health was perfectly okay and doctors from Medanta Medicity headed by Naresh Trehan have already checked him and certified him fit.
"I am fine, I am ready to walk two kilometres just now,"Hazare was quoted as saying by Kejriwal whose remarks were loudly cheered by hundreds of the Gandhian's supporters gathered outside Tihar.
On Wednesday night, Hazare refused a check up by doctors from GB Pant hospital apprehending that they may remove him from the jail on health grounds.
Asserting that the government has bowed down to people's pressure, Kejriwal said,"we have just entered the battle, a long fight remains."
He appealed to the government to give a chance to the Jan Lokpal draft prepared by the civil society for Parliament to discuss.
"People have a right to say what draft will go to Parliament. They are supreme in democracy,"he said rejecting government's contention that civil society cannot make law.
Kejriwal also attacked the government for the arrest of Hazare and seven of his associates, including himself, on the morning of Tuesday and the decision to release all of them within hours.
He also disputed the government's contention that the police did not seek remand of Hazare and others and that it was the decision of the executive magistrate's decision to remand them to seven days judicial custody.
"First they arrested us on the ground that we will disturb peace. Police asked us to give a written undertaking that we will not go to JP Park. But we told them we will go there soon after our release. Then they asked for seven days custody,"he said.
Kejriwal said there was a need for a debate over police power to detain and release people at will."They say we are bad but how in two hours, we have become alright?...Are we toys? What kind of law and order and democracy is this?"
Hazare credited the people of India for this"victory"and thanked them and thousands of people who took to the streets in a non-violent way throughout the country, he said quoting the Gandhian.
He said violence occurs only in rallies of political parties not in the campaign of Hazare."This only shows the government will have to bow before the demands of the people,"he said.
Former law minister and Hazare associate Shanti Bhushan said the decision to allow Hazare to fast for 15 days showed that his demands were reasonable and that the government should bring in a new Lokpal Bill after consulting the Gandhian.
"I am very happy that ultimately good sense has prevailed on the government and it has agreed to permit Anna to fast for 14 days and that shows Anna was never unreasonable in his demands,"Bhushan said.
He claimed the provisions of the Lokpal Bill put forward by the Hazare team were"totally"Constitutional."I can certify that they are Constitutional and I think it would be wise for the government to withdraw the (present) bill from Parliament and move a fresh bill after talking to Anna."
Meanwhile, Hazare's supporters gathered outside Tihar Jail to greet the news of government agreeing to the demands of the Gandhian.
As supporters started pouring in chanting anti-corruption slogans, about 250 Delhi policemen were deployed to provide security around Tihar, while another 200 men in uniform were kept on standby.
Bomb disposal teams and dog squads conducted a surprise check outside Tihar Jail here early this morning, soon after the Anna Hazare team announced that the Gandhian would move out of the prison to launch his anti-corruption protest at Ramlila Maidan.
The teams descended outside the jail, where Hazare supporters were camping to express solidarity with the 73-year-old social activist, at around 3:30 am and conducted a thorough check and sanitised the area.

Anna Movement: Opposition lashes out at UPA
As Anna supporters are swelling up, the UPA is acting in the most stupid, immature and undemocratic manner. All this has provoked public reactions and the Opposition seems to be in an unsparing mood towards the govt. The Opposition on Wednesday said the UPA government’s restrictions on public protests were unheard of even during the British period and demanded "bold decisions" to tackle corruption.

By ordering the illegitimate and undemocratic detention of Anna Hazare before he began his fast in support of stronger anti-corruption provisions in the Lokpal Bill and the arrest of a large number of peaceful protesters in the national capital, the United Progressive Alliance government revealed its ugly, desperate face. As per the constitution of India no representative government in a democracy can deny citizens their fundamental right to dissent and peaceful protest.

'Free Anna Now'- Nation's New Chant
Me Anna Hu”,“Please Arrest Me”,“Anna Tum Aaage Bado Hum Tumare Sath Hai”- these were some of the key slogans that echoed in the capital and its adjoining regions on 16 August. Everyone from young to old participated in support of Anna Hazare. The participation of protesters is out and out apolitical in nature. It shows people’s anguish against a corruption bathed govt and its inability to fight it.
Looking at the massive protests against Anna Hazare’s arrest one can understand the importance people are giving to this agitation against Govt’s Lokpal Bill. It seems that the govt is in inescapable circumstances. By arresting Anna the govt has defaced its image further. After all what is the UPA govt afraid of? Is it the formation of the Lokpal Bill or the ever increasing popularity of Anna Hazare that cannot be entertained by it? Whatever may be the reason, it is very much clear that by arresting Anna Govt has done a blunder by detaining him. Govt treated Anna’a arrest as a‘painful duty’ citing that his arrest would help maintaining law and order in the country.
The UPA govt may provide a number of reasons but it fails to hide its 'nervousness’ and ‘panic’ . Never would have they expected that nation will stand for Anna in such a manner. What it fails to understand is that people of India are not only protesting against corruption but also against govt’s incompetence in providing a quality life fulfilling all basic necessities. Indians who are shouting slogans are full of anguish for lack of basic needs. From electricity, water, etc to inflation people are filled with anger and disgust. It is this emotion and anger which Anna Hazare has unfurled.
UPA to save its face levied baseless corruption charges against Anna Hazare. These charges did not budge Indians from showing support to Anna. Delhi, Mumbai, Ralegan Sidhi (Anna’s home town) everywhere people from poor to rich shout in unison today‘Free Anna Now’. The inevitable protests have reaffirmed the significance of the‘Lokpal Bill’ or it would have not amassed so much of public support.
As govt continues to convince Anna to leave jail, the 74 year old Gandhian remains defiant, demanding unconditional release to be allowed to go to JP Park for protests and fast.
After a long time India has witnessed such massive uprising, Anna Hazare has ignited the imagination of young and old alike. As the whole nation awaits imminent Anna’s release there are questions to be pondered upon- Can we call Anna Hazare the new age Gandhi? Are we as a nation ready for continuance of a non-violent protest or it will fizzle out? Govt vs. Anna- who will be victorious? Think over it.
